Mens team tennis 2012.....

Calling all Mens Team Players....Interested in playing Mens Team Tennis?

Following hot on the heels of the ladies, the club would also like to hear from any of our men players who would like to represent us during the summer of 2012 and beyond. In terms of men's tennis the club currently has three teams playing in the Hampshire & IOW Leagues, four teams in the Hampshire & IOW Veterans Leagues (3 X 45+ and 1 x 55+), one team in Basingstoke Men's League together with various mixed teams in the Apsley and Sarum Leagues. These teams are in addition to sides that represent the Club at various age groups in the National Knock Out competitions.

We hope that through the various contacts that we have within the Club you will have already been spotted and your availability for team tennis discussed. The team captains review those players who participate in the various box leagues and also those players who participate in the squad training programme that currently exists at the Club for new and existing players. However, we recognise that for one reason or another we may have missed you and if this is the case please contact Mark or myself. Our contact numbers are below.

Ideally we would like to enter more Club sides in the various leagues especially at age group 45+, 55+ and the Basingstoke League. Sadly this cannot be achieved as it is important to have sufficient courts available for those members who do not wish to participate in team tennis and also our coaching squads.

You do not need to respond to this notice if you have represented the Club regularly over the past year as we assume you will want to continue playing this coming summer. However please contact us by 18 February if you want to get your name 'in the frame' and we can then assess the way forward. Just click on Phil or Mark's name below to send them a message.

New Format for 2012 Tennis Club Championships senior events....

Just in case you are planning your summer around your attempt to win this years club championships, you should know that the format and dates will be different in 2012.

This year we will be running a straight knock out format in all the event categories. A significant change is the shift to the end of the summer to avoid clashing with the busy team matches season in May and June.

The very popular one day doubles events will still take place but they will not be linked to the club championships

click here for dates and more info

Note that the junior club championships will still take place over May/June and the junior finals day will be on Sunday 1st July

New Floodlights Installation gets underway....

The installation of floodlights on courts 4567 will get underway next week starting Monday 30 January. The initial phase of works will take around two weeks and will mean that two courts will not be available at any one time over that fortnight (note that weekends will be unaffected).

Bookings will be taken on courts 4&5 only although it may be that on the day it is actually courts 6&7 that are available for play. The important thing to note is just that we will be without two of the courts during the week. There will be some unavoidable distraction and noise during the work as a result of trench digging, etc in order to prepare and install the floodlight posts.

There are 18 posts in all to be installed providing 6 floodlights to each court. The positioning and quality of the lights will ensure a much better quality installation than we currently have on courts 1&2.

Members co-operation and understanding during the works is appreciated.

American Doubles Social Tournament- Sat 21 January...

Following the successful American Doubles format tournament that was held on 1st October, we are holding another on Saturday 21 January  3-6pm

The format is that players enter individually and rotate and play with and against different players in each round of matches. It really is a great social event and is a good way to meet and play against other members. We hope that everyone who enjoyed the last event will come back for this one and it would be good to see some more new faces as well.

All standards are welcome. There will be play between 3 and 6pm followed by tea and sandwiches. Indoor courts will be reserved for the event and balls and prizes will be provided. Cost per player is £7.50

We hope to see you there!....sign up at reception or on the notice board in the bar.

Advance entry is preferred for this event so that the format for the day is easily planned.

Tennis First Vets Tournament report and photo....

Tennis First finalists

Peter Friedmann, The Club Chairman, hosted an open vets tournament at the club on Sunday October 23rd.  Mens and ladies pairs came from a wide area including the Hampshire Club, New Milton, East Dorset and further afield.

The purpose of the tournament was firstly to give people a day of enjoyable and competitive tennis playing people they would not usually encounter.  Secondly, the tournament aimed to raise some money for Tennis First - the Tennis Charity that adds support to our very best youngsters such as Liam Broady and Ollie Golding who are on the edge of breaking into the men's tour and will be the successors to Andy Murray.

The final was won by our own Bob Battersby and Nigel Espley, who defeated John Wilson and Chris Mitchell from the Hampshire Club.  All those who did not enter missed a really good day.

Sunday Morning Tennis Mix-In....

The new Sunday Mix started in September at the new start time of 11AM The Tennis Committee are keen to make this a success. Feedback suggests that the club needs to have more mix in type activities for non team players and to help integrate new members. Last summer we held an afternoon mix in which started off well but then attendances slipped until the session no longer happened.
