indoor court Q & A's

Technical
Q.   What will the courts look like?
A.   The building will be a permanent fabric framed structure similar to that at West Worthing Tennis and Squash Club. (See illustrations and information here)

Q.   What will the surface be?
A.   It will be a hard court surface, either porous painted macadam or an acrylic painted finish. The final choice will be based on the advice of our technical consultants.

Q.   How will the building be heated and illuminated?
A.   The structure will not be heated; Lighting will be installed to meet LTA specifications. The translucent fabric will reduce the need for artificial lighting during daytime hours.

Financial
Q.   How much will it cost to play in the indoor courts?
A.   Hourly rates will be in line with the typical rates for Indoor Facilities to be found locally and financial projections have been prepared on the basis of the following:
   Winter - £14 per hour Peak / £8 per hour off-peak
Summer – £6 at all times
Coaching - £6 per hour (in addition to the normal coaching fee)
Walk on rate for juniors - £4 per hour for courts that have not been booked in advance.
Peak times are likely to be evenings after 7PM plus some other periods at weekends and possibly on some midweek mornings – exact peak timings will be subject to review and ultimately be based on court usage / demand.

Q.   In the summer, what happens if all outside courts are in use and only indoor courts are available? Will I have to pay for the indoor court?
A.   In the summer season, if you use the indoor courts by choice (eg in bad weather) you would pay the relevant fee. If no other courts are available, the indoor courts will be offered at no charge.

Operational
Q.   Will ordinary members get the chance to play indoors?
A.   The courts will be available to book by all members. Apart from the after school period 3:30-7:00PM and weekend mornings which will be used almost exclusively for group coaching, members will have the opportunity to book courts up to one week ahead.
The indoor courts will not be booked for team matches. (only in some National League matches where indoor court back up is required for visiting teams traveling long distances)
Click here for the the sample usage pattern which illustrates when members will be able to book courts.

Q.   How are the courts booked – who gets preference?
A.   It is planned that members will be able to book up to 7 days ahead. Outside of the group coaching periods mentioned above, most courts will be available to book. One court may be allocated in the daytime periods for individual coaching. There will be no individual coaching in the evenings after 7PM.
Some evening slots and possibly weekday morning slots may be offered as seasonal block bookings in the winter in the same way that existing floodlit bookings are currently operated.
Members will generally be able to book the courts in half-hour, hourly, or 90 minute slots. However evening slots in the winter season will be booked as 90 minutes sessions, 7-8:30pm and 8:30-10pm, similar to the current floodlit booking arrangements.

Q.   Are there any restrictions on use of the courts?
A.   Planning approval conditions dictate that play must end by 10:30PM each day and that the indoor courts are only used for tennis.

Q.   How will the loss of 2 floodlit outdoor courts affect floodlit court availability?
A.   It is not anticipated that keen outdoor floodlit players will be significantly affected. Apart from Wednesday evenings, applications for current evening floodlit block bookings have not been contested.
However we will be submitting a planning application for the floodlighting of courts 6 and 7. (We will be able to fill these courts with evening coaching should member demand prove to be negligible)

Q.   What will happen to Friday club night?
A.   The courts will be reserved for club night in the same way that existing courts are used. This will guarantee that club night takes place regardless of weather conditions.
